Horizontal vs. Vertical Foundation Cracks

Crack direction is one piece of evidence, not a complete diagnosis. Horizontal cracks can appear with lateral wall movement, while vertical cracks can occur in several circumstances. The surrounding condition matters.

Look beyond direction

Consider whether the wall is displaced, whether the crack changes over time, whether water is entering, and whether other parts of the home show movement.
