Stair-step cracking follows mortar joints in a stepped pattern. The pattern can be associated with movement, but the crack alone does not establish the cause or required repair.
What to document
Note where the crack begins and ends, whether there is displacement, whether it appears to be changing, and whether nearby floors, doors, windows or walls show additional movement.
Evaluation before repair
Cosmetic filling may hide a symptom without answering why it formed. If movement is suspected, the underlying condition should be evaluated first. See foundation settlement.
